Unbearably brutal and vital at the same time. To give you perspective, this book made the characters in "A Little Life" seem like they were doing cartwheels at a trampoline park.

This novel lays bare the most grinding poverty, ignorance, and cruelty imaginable, then ruthlessly drags the reader through. If you have thin skin, your skin will be torn by this book. If your skin is thick, but translucent, like mine, you will be sullied and stained and carry your taint around with you for some time afterwards. The thing is, this book depicts how most of the world gets by. I really do believe we should be reminded of that at certain intervals.

We are lucky.

A story of desperate struggle and poverty. It is sad and cruel, yet touching and brutally honest.However, I am not sure if I would recommend it, even though I gave it a high rating. It is unbearably raw, brutal and vulgar in every aspect. Vulgar people, vulgar language....I found it offensive and disturbing at times. Seen through the eyes of a very young person it is the story of family love, pain and faint hope.P.S. The author committed suicide in 2014, shortly after the book was published

This book is hard to read for various reasons. Only at the end appears a faint hope for the protagonist, otherwise it is the account of a dreadful childhood. Also the narrative switches between different time levels, but it is difficult to tell them apart and therefore the reader only gets a vague idea of the succession of events. Knowing a little about the biography of the author and about Hungarian history helps to understand (and appreciate) this interesting book.

This wonderfully written book is vulgar in every way. The people are vulgar. Their language is vulgar. And their lives are also vulgar. But the effect is a poetic depiction of a miserable life in a miserable country in a miserable world. As much as I think this book is wonderful, I am not sure I would recommend it to anyone. I read it in Hungarian, but I suspect that the translation caught the effect. The author committed suicide shortly after the book's publication.

A prominent review site called the recent English translation absurd and in the vein of Kafka. It's not. Like the blurb says, it's realistic, presented in a very matter-of-fact style. Called the whole thing off.
