Paen Scott is a Dark One: a vampire without a soul. And his mother is about to lose hers too if Paen can’t repay a debt to a demon by finding a relic known as the Jilin God in five days.Half-elf Samantha Cosse may have gotten kicked out of the Order of Diviners, but she’s still good at finding things, which is why she just opened her own private investigation agency.Paen is one of Sam’s first clients and the only one to set her elf senses tingling, which makes it pretty much impossible to keep their relationship on a professional level. Sam is convinced that she is Paen’s Beloved—the woman who can give him back his soul...whether he wants it or not.

Another good addition to the series. Entertaining, not life changing. I liked the characters well enough, it had a good plot (with a few differences than the previous installments). A nice distraction.Setting: Castle de Ath aka Castle Death near Edinbergh; Eye Scry, Discrett Private Investigations; home in Lammermuir Hills; Diviners House; her bedroom a virtual jungle (needing a machete to get to the bed courtesy of elf mother); Real Mary Kings Close haunted spot in Edinburgh; Duns Moor Scottish battleground, populated with ghost of warriors that died there, now a film spot; Akashic Plain; Theme: one gets his soul, one loses her soul. And they love find loveCharacters:Samantha Cosse: half
Paen, a Dark One who leads a nice life with his three Moravian brothers and their parents in Scotland. Sam is a mutt, half human half sun-elf, who got kicked out of the academy of diviners and now opens her own private detective agency with her cousin Clare, a fairy in denial.Paen gets a visit by an alaster a demon type who calls in a debt of his father and gives him 5 days to find a certain statue or his mother will loose her soul. Paen and his brother Finn then employ Sam as a private

4.5I think this book is one of the reasons why I remember liking the series. This was by far leaps and bounds better than the first book. The characters are funny and the story is interesting. This was an enjoyable read. I loved the combination of the funny and odd heroine with the dour and serious hero. His blunt statements turn a bit absurd when he is with the heroine and I find it comical. One of my favourite scenes was him not going home with her. He told her she needed sleep not sex.

Content Warning: mild descriptions of consensual sex.Katie MacAlisters Dark Ones series was on a pretty blah path. I couldnt handle the snookie wookums in Book #3, and I loathed the kittenish voice of the reader in Book #2s audio version. This whole thing started, though, because I was an English major who read and loved a vampire book yes, a vampire book and then felt ashamed of myself. I now realize that at the time, Book #1 was exactly at my speed. The sex scenes were mild, but showed just
Well this one was better than the last but still left me wanting more from the characters. The plot was good, storyline fun and intriguing, sex scenes very very good, and it was less silly that the last one by far. I am not sure why this author insists on making the fighting scenes so silly, but I really dislike it. That was my main complaint with this book, the ending fight sequence. The rest of the book was pretty good. I thoroughly enjoyed the story lines of the sun elf and her faery cousin
