Lands of Ash (Elemental Realms #1)
Stoic Militia Captain Karvir and his ardent brother, Ketyl, lead a skeleton force against the Fiery Horde. Everything--their families, their home, their very world--hangs on their success against impossible odds. Meanwhile across the wilderness, young Brode and his pregnant stepmother flee, hoping to find safety near the sea.
As the Elementals pour through the portals, a sacrificial act gives hope for peace, but is it sustainable? Can the human race fight back from the edge of extinction? And could the key to their survival lie in a child?
Lands. Of AshA great tale about facing life. This is the third or fourth H.L. Burke book I've read each one is a keeper. War against powerful a enemy, being the underdog (sorry Soot). Elemental are at the heart of this tale so the battles are different dealing with five planes of existence, the four elements air, fire, earth and water. Plus the plane where humans eek out a hard life. A hard book to put even for essentials like eating and sleeping, one you are sure to enjoy.
It is a time of war, but its not like any war. This is different. The enemy is different. For centuries before the Elemental worlds coexisted in peace, until the day the Portal Keeper died. At that time the keeper was human. After a time, a new Portal Keeper is born to the Fire Elementals. The invasion begins. The Fire Horde is out to scorch the entire human realm. The human population splinters into small groups as they try to survive the onslaught. Karvir and his brother, Ketyl, have pulled
I should give a brief disclaimer before I continue with this review I do know HL Burke. However, she did not solicit this book review. Im reviewing it because I enjoyed the book.Lands of Ash slips from one POV to another, though the main characters are definitely Captain Karvir and his brother Ketyl, who take the brightest spotlights. Karvirs wife, Willa, also plays a role, as done young Brode, a boy whose journey at first doesnt seem to be part of Karvir and Ketyls tale. The story is set in a
Born in a small town in north central Oregon, H. L. Burke spent most of her childhood around trees and farm animals and was always accompanied by a book. Growing up with epic heroes from Middle Earth and Narnia keeping her company, she also became an incurable romantic. An addictive personality, she jumped from one fandom to another, being at times completely obsessed with various books, movies,I came into this book not sure what kind of book I was getting. I'm not sure what I expected, but it surpassed my expectations. The writing flowed beautifully, the world building was dynamic without being too over the top confusing, and the characters were individual and wonderfully complicated. Elements about it reminded me of the Mistborn trilogy by Sanderson. The plot begins with the end of the world and then shows what happens after that to the people who saved it. Is that a spoiler? H.L.
Even knowing some of the things that were going to happen in the story (from reading a few reviews) I was very involved, particularly in the first half of the book. The second half was maybe a little less interesting to me. Also, one particular character development in the second half felt like it happened far too quickly to me. World-building was very good for the most part, except that I found myself only really understanding two of the types of fire elementals. I think there were two other
I received this book from the author to give an honest review. As I started this book it took me awhile to get into the story. I kept struggling not sure if it was just what was going on or if it was the story itself but once I got about 1/4 through the book it became a drug. I could not get enough. It was full of everything I love in a book.
