"يولد الأطفال فيستقبلون الحياة بالصريخ، هذا هو المعروف. ولكن يروى أن الزين، والعهدة على أمه والنساء اللائي حضرت ولادتها، أول ما مس الأرض، انفجر ضاحكاً. وظل هكذا طول حياته. كبر وليس في فمه غير سنتين، واحدة في فكه الأعلى، والأخرى في فكه الأسفل، وأمه تقول إن فمه كان مليئاً بأسنان بيضاء كاللؤلؤ. ولما كان في السادسة ذهبت به يوماً لزيارة قريبات لها، فمرا عند مغيب الشمس على خرابة يشاع أنها مسكونة. وفجأة تسمر الزين مكانه وأخذ يرتجف كمن به حمى، ثم صرخ. وبعدها لزم الفراش أياماً. ولما قام من مرضه كانت أسنانه جميعاً قد سقطت، إلا واحدة في فكه الأعلى، وأخرى في فكه الأسفل.
كان وجه الزين مستطيلاً، ناشئ عظام الوجنتين والفكين وتحت العينين. جبهته باردة مستديرة، عيناه صغيرتان محمرتان دائماً، محجراهما غائران مثل كهفين في وجهه. ولم يكن على وجهه شعر إطلاقاً. لم تكن له حواجب ولا أجفان، وقد بلغ مبلغ الرجال وليست له لحية أو شارب. تحت هذا الوجه رقبة طويلة. (من بين الألقاب التي أطلقها الصبيان على الزين" الزرافة"). والرقبة تقف على كتفين قويتين تنهد لأن على بقية الجسم في شكل مثلث، الذراعان طويلتان كذراعي القرد... والساقان رقيقان طويلتان كساقي الكركي. أما القدمان فقد كانتا مفرطحتين عليهما ندوب قديمة والزين يذكر قصة كل جرح من هذه الجروح... يحكي الزين قصته فيقول: "الجرح دا يا جماعة ليه حكاية" ويستفزه محجوب قائلاً: "حكاية شنو يا عدير؟ يا مشيت تسرق ضربوك بي غصن شوك". ويقع هذا موقعاً حسناً في نفس الزين، فيستلقي على قفاه ضاحكاً، ثم يضرب الأرض بيديه ويرفع رجليه في الهواء ويظل يضحك بطريقته الفذة، ذلك الضحك الغريب الذي يشبه نهيق الحمار. وكان ضحكة قد أعدى الحاضرين جميعاً، فيتحول المجلس إلى قهقهة مروية.

ويتمالك الزين نفسه، ويمسح بكم ثوبه الدمع الذي سال على وجهه من الضحك، ويقول: أي... أي... مشيت أسرق". يأخذك الطيب الصالح إلى عوالم تزخر بشخصيات تضحكك حيناً تبكيك أحياناً، وتزرع في قلبك تلك المسحة الإنسانية التي تكشف عن براعة الطيب الصالح في الوصول سريعاً إلى مساحة احساسات قارئه. وصفيات وسرديات وعالم هو رهن مشهد القارئ وواقعه تتيح التعرف إلى إبداعات الطيب الصالح في مسار الصفة الروائية.

the book was amazing & i'm so thrilled it was a great journey

I read this small book (two short stories and a novella) right after finishing [[Season of Migration to the North]] by the same author, Tayeb Salih. I definitely liked the first book better than this one. The last story in the book, what I called the novella, was the title story and I found it to be the most interesting but also a somewhat unbelievable one. The story is of a buffoon named Zein, a village idiot, who after falling in love with many of the village's young women (of course) marries

This was the third book for my African Lit class this semester, and by far the most fun - probably because it wasn't dealing directly with racism or post-colonial problems, which is also why I don't feel like I can refer to it as my 'favorite'. That said: Tayeb Salih does deal with serious issues of cultural shift, particularly in the first and second stories of this collection. Tayeb Salih was one of the great Muslim Sudanese writers. Arguably his most famous book, Season of Migration to the North, is super hard to come by - but NYRB has gotten to this one, Wedding of Zein, and I suddenly started feeling like I should read some Muslim authors when that idiot almost started WWIII the other day.Zein is the village idiot, some sort of ecstatic goofball who ricochets around town crashing weddings and grabbing asses. 3.5/5 I enjoyed the style, it was interesting and symbollical for me but that was too short for me to get more into the story. I will definitely read Season of Migration to the North soon.

I read Season of Migration to the North a few months back and really enjoyed it, so I was happy to find this collection of short stories. I liked all three of them, but "A Handful of Dates" was my favorite. "The Doum Tree of Wad Hamid," I liked for its valorization of village tradition, and how the community was forever entangled with the Doum Tree. The Doum Tree is as crucial to the village as the villagers, and there is a slight pro-environmental protection dimension to this story. "A Handful
