I picked this book up on a trip to Whitby in late December. The sole purpose of my Whitby trip was to see the spot where Bram Stoker had received his inspiration for the English settings of Dracula. It was a gloomy, rainy and cold day, perfect for such an adventure.
Living in the subtropics of Australia, travelling around Yorkshire in mid-winter was a beautiful experience and picking up Hauntings in Yorkshire along the way was a lovely way to set the scene.
I think this book is perfect for residents of Yorkshire and Northern England or anybody who has spent an amount of time in Yorkshire.
My critiques of this are as follows;
*If you're looking for a book with a scare, this probably isn't for you. While it provides some nice chills when read alone in a dark room, the stories are too short to provide any depth of fear or fright. My personal preference would be for longer stories to enable a fearful environment to be created.
*The editing could use a tweak. There are a number of grammatical mistakes that pop up throughout.

While I personally prefer something with a bigger fear factor, this is good for a broader audience and a fantastic amount of research has gone into this. A 3.5-4 out of 5 I reckon.

Stephen Wade was born in Leeds and educated at the universities of Wales and Leeds. He taught in further and higher education for many years, and this was followed by six years as a writer working in prisons. He has written over fifty books, mainly in non-fiction, and he also lectures part-time at the University of Hull.

When I was younger I'd buy books about local ghosts, legends and folk tales at every National Trust/Heritage Site shop we visited. I'm not sure why, because I was (and remain) a total wuss - I don't believe in ghosts but that doesn't stop me being completely terrified of them. This was a fun little nostalgia trip of a book about various 'hauntings and experiences' in Yorkshire. The stories weren't long enough to leave too much of a lasting impact, but it was interesting to read about places I've
