This book was full of very interesting and helpful information - hence the 4 star rating. However, that might be a bit high, because other things about the book really bothered me. He is so antagonistic toward those who use/advocate medication of any kind during pregnancy, and even implies that mothers who use medication during their labor and delivery haven't earned the title of mother! Blah, blah, blah. I've had three babies and used medication every time, and two of the three were fantasticI understand that Dr. Bradley has helped many people, but this book is tragically outdated when it comes to its social views. The medicine itself is out-of-date, and worse, Dr. Bradley is stuck in a long-past era; in the modern day he comes across as arrogant and egotistical while belittling and degrading the birthing individual, who he believes lacks the instinct to birth without a (male) coach. Dr. Bradley also aggressively pushes on the reader his version of the right kind of family and

Many techniques and practices are outlined that I have no doubt will help me substantially making my way through the first born in my family.Cons: More than half of the book is spent either repeating the same thing or attempting to convince the reader that natural childbirth is better than any other way. As Im exploring my different childbirth options, Ive heard a few people mention The Bradley Method. When I found this book at Half Price Books, I was intrigued. Ive gotten a few weird glances because of the strangeness of the title, but the emphasis on the husband in this book is due to the fact that it was published in the 1960s, when men were not welcome in the delivery room.There were some very good things about this book: it provided detailed accounts of how a birth looked while utilizing
I read this as a companion to our Bradley classes. Althought there is a lot of helpful information, the arrogant and fairly offensive way Bradley writes was frustrating. Between his comments about hospital nurseries as "concentration camps" and that only those that arrive via natural birth can have real BIRTH-days as opposed to "delivery days", I began to discount the rest of his arguments. A good editor would have gone a long way to making this a respectable resource.
Wow. There is so much wrong with this book. The general ideas/principles of the Bradley method are fine. What makes this book so absolutely awful is his condescending tone, not to mention his 1950s world-view. I hate the term "natural childbirth". If you push the baby out, it's natural. What he was actually talking about is medicated vs. unmediated. I disliked his constant put down of anyone who has had or considers medication for the pain.
